In the 18th and 19th centuries, people could tell whether or not you were a "lady" or a "commoner" by the state of your hands: if they were soft and well-manicured, you had to be a "lady", but if not you were most likely a poor "commoner". These days there may not be such a class distinction, but you’d be surprised at the amount of notice people still take of your hands!
So to keep your hands looking gorgeous, my best advice is: treat them with the same care as you would your face! Here are some hints for hand care:
Make Friends with Rubber Gloves
Always wear rubber gloves whenever washing up or cleaning. Cleaning products and detergents can be very harsh and drying – hence the term "dishpan hands"! Also, don't use soap to wash your hands - use a shower gel or body wash, they are much less drying.
Hand Cream
Apply a hand cream regularly throughout the day – preferably after every time your hands have been in water. If you usually forget to do this, keep a few jars on hand – one on your desk, one on your handbag, and one in the bathroom.
Cuticle Care
Make sure you massage your hand cream well into your cuticles whenever you apply it. You can gently push them back with a cuticle stick if they are looking scrappy, but never cut them as this leaves your nail bed unprotected.
Manicures
Have a manicure once or twice a month if you can afford it. If not, give yourself one at home: remove old polish, file, exfoliate your hands, apply two coats of new polish, then slather on heaps of hand cream when everything is dry. (See our Do-It-Yourself Manicures article!)
Slip Slop Slap
Put sunscreen on the backs of your hands, EVERY day! This includes wintertime! Dermatologists believe that up to 95% of the signs of ageing are caused by sun exposure, so if you don’t want sun-spotted, wrinkly lizard hands, slip slop slap! You should use the highest protection available, which in Australia is SPF30+.
Vitamin C Rescue
If the backs of your hands have seen a bit too much sun and are looking a bit wrinkly or showing age spots and freckles, you can try apply a Vitamin C cream or serum every day to help rebuild lost collagen and repair some of the damage.
Your hands are an important tool. As well as protecting your hands from the harmful substances and chemicals by using gloves, you skin needs some additional care and attention to keep it looking healthy.
Do:
·
Wash and dry your hands before putting on gloves, if your hands are dirty or you have been already handled chemicals with bare hands.
·
Wash and dry your hands thoroughly after using gloves.
·
W ash your hands and change the gloves after spillages or splashes with substances onto gloves have occurred.
·
Apply a suitable hand cream after washing your hands.
·
Report any skin reactions or rashes to the Occupational Health department.
Do not:
·
Do not use an oil based emollient prior to wearing gloves as this can increase absorption of the proteins found in the glove and can cause glove deterioration. If you need an emollient to stop your hands drying out, these are best used at the end of a work session.
·
Do not scrub the skin or use abrasive cleansers. The Occupational Health department will be able to advise on the suitable cleansers.
·
Do not use workplace solvents e.g. paraffin, acetone, to clean you hands.
·
Do not use latex gloves unless there is a clear advantage over other glove materials (see the Glove Selection Guidance on the Occupational Health web pages).
·
If you suffer with eczema or dermatitis, try wearing cotton liners inside your gloves to avoid your skin being irritated by sweat and friction from the glove.
Cotton liners are also helpful for persons with normal skin if you find excessive sweating inside gloves a nuisance to you.
Skin cleansers
Skin cleansers are designed to remove contaminants from the skin. However soaps and any cleansing product that foams will also remove natural oils that help waterproof your skin. Frequent use can cause dryness and irritate your skin. Although soap and water may have been suitable for your skin in the past, if dryness is a problem then it is time to change to an emollient cleanser that soothes dry, itchy skin.

Some skin cleansers work reasonable well on the skin contaminant whilst others may not be so effective. Substances that mix well with water are able to be removed effectively by using soap and water. However, they might not be effective enough to remove oily or resinous substances.
If this is the case, select the least aggressive cleanser to do the job.

Hand creams and emollients
Hand creams can be used daily as they help to maintain a stable and adequately hydrated barrier layer to help the skin remain in good condition and help it to retain its protective role. Water based creams are best used when using gloves frequently during your working day.

Emollients are the mainstay of all treatment in chronic inflammatory skin conditions. They are used to moisturise, lubricate and soothe dry irritated skin by providing a lipid film on the epidermis, so diminishing water loss and preventing the skin from drying. They also work by replacing natural oils which have been removed by soap, water or irritants.
